It might not be remembered as fondly as other sitcoms of the 1990s, but there was a time when Home Improvement was one of the most popular shows on TV. One thing that made the show work so well was the interplay between Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) and Al Borland (Richard Karn), the hosts of the local cable show Tool Time, but Karn was never supposed to be on the show full time.
